William 12

Hi Everyone,
Here is my report about the Emperor Tamarin Monkey.
Hope you like it.
The animal I am going to research is the Emperor Tamarin Monkey. It is native to southwest Amazon Basin, East Peru, North Bolivia and in the West states of Acre and Amazonas. The Emperor tamarin Monkey inhabits tropical rainforests, living deep in the forest and also in open tree-covered areas. It is a diurnal monkey, spending most of it’s day in the trees. The Emperor tamarin lives together in groups between 2 to 8 individuals. The leader of the group is the oldest female who leads the group over several mature males. The Emperor Tamarin are omnivore, primarily eating fruits, insects and sap it also eats bird eggs and small vertebrates such as tree frogs. As it is light weight it can reach food on the end of branches that most heavier animals can’t reach. The fur on the body is grey in colour and it has yellow spots on it’s chest, it also has black hands and a brown tail. The easiest way to recognise it, is by it’s big long white moustache which extends to both sides beyond the shoulder. The gestation period is 140 – 145 days and the births are mostly of twins although triplets happen on occasion. All the males help with the birth, helping to care and support the young, some times carrying them to their mother to nurse. I think the babies are very cute with their tiny moustache. At about 3 months the babies are weaned and at the end of their second year they are fully mature. The length of the Emperor Tamarin is 24 to 26cm, but it also has a tail that reaches a length of 35cm. The average weight for an Emperor tamarin is between 300 and 400 grams. The Emperor Tamarin monkeys life span is usually 15 years.
From William.
